Edmund Phinney was born July 27, 1723 in Barnstable, Massachusetts, the son of John Phinney and Martha Coleman. Edmund married Elizabeth Meserve about 1750 in Gorham, Maine. They had nine children: Decker Phinney 1752–1806, Sarah Phinney 1754–1825 married Brown, Joseph Phinney 1757–1825, Elizabeth Phinney 1759–1828 married Whitney, Edmund Phinney 1760–1828, Stephen Phinney 1763–1800 James Phinney 1768–1860, Nathaniel Phinney 1771–1850 and Patience Phinney married Carsley. During the American Revolution he was a Colonel. Edmund passed away December 15, 1815 in Gorham, Maine and was buried at South Street Cemetery, Gorham, Cumberland County, Maine. --taken from WikiTree.

The 12th Massachusetts Regiment, also known as 18th Continental Regiment and Phinney's Regiment, was raised on April 23, 1775, under Colonel Edmund Phinney outside of Boston, Massachusetts. The regiment saw action at the Battle of Bunker Hill, Battle of Valcour Island, Battle of Saratoga and the Battle of Monmouth. The regiment was disbanded on January 1, 1781, at West Point, New York. --taken from Wikipedia.
