The name of Woolwine appears to be of German origin. The first known Woolwines in the United States are Philip, and his wife, Elizabeth, who appear in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1767. Their son, John (Johannes Wohlwein) was baptized in 1767. Daughter, Barbara, was baptized 2 years later. Philip leased land in 1774 in Frederick County, Virginia. In October of 1784, Philip was listed in a land record as late of the Borough of Winchester but now of the town of Stanton in Augusta County, Virginia. Philip died in Augusta County about October of 1786. His wife, Elizabeth was last found there in 1820 census. The following are the known children of Philip and Elizabeth were: Philip S. (born 1766?, married Elizabeth Harris April 28, 1797, and died June 26, 1850); John (born April 24, 1767, probably died in infancy); Barbara (born Feb 7, 1769); Catherine (born 1770-1780, married Martin Weigant); Jacob (married Mary Bailor/ Baylor of Augusta County, April 4, 1802 and died before 1830); Susanna (born ca. 1778, married John Hively); John (born ca. 1779, married Margaret Rebecca Haymaker, died in 1849); George G. (born ca. 1782, married first Elizabeth Anderson and second, married Susanna Galloway, and died between 1861-1864); William Lewis (born.

May 28, 1782, married Mary "Polly" Robertson/Robinson, died ca. 1845); George Washington (born April 23, 1786, married first Hannah Beanard, second, Eve Robertson/Robinson). Descendents live in Virginia, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Kansas, Kentucky and elsewhere.
