The author, John Rice Barlow was born in 1936 at Port Neches, Texas, the son of Joseph Clifton "Sapp" Barlow and Minnie Jo "Nig" Rice Barlow In 1943, he and his parents moved to the home of his maternal grandfather, John Dabney Rice. This volume, one of several autobiographical volumes, covers his memories while living at Mabank, Texas. Includes school memories and memories of his Rice relatives. This account ends with the death of his mother in 1948 from cancer. He and his father moved to Spurger, Texas, in August 1948.

Includes memoires of Pauline Rice Jennings, Alva (Sallie) Rice Jones, Velma Jennie Rice Wilson and Johnnie Belle Rice Andrews, his mothers sisters.

Also includes a pedigree chart, showing ancestors of his mother, Minnie Jo Rice Barlow (1907-1948). She was born at Mabank, Texas, the daughter of John Dabney Rice (1864-1951) and Florence Belle Brittain Rice (1869-1917). Ancestors include: John Rice (ca. 1760-1834) of Tennessee and Madison County, Alabama -- John Cartwright (1725-1780) of Maryland and North Carolina -- George Brittain (ca. 1755-1825) of Virginia and Georgia.
