John Pauley (175_-1821) was possibly born in Maryland or New Jersey. He and his wife, Elizabeth, were married ca. 1774 in Virginia. They had eight children, ca. 1775-1795. The family migrated from Montgomery County, Virginia, to Nicholas County, Kentucky, ca. 1793. He died in Nicholas County. Records lists children and grandchildren for each generation, but chiefly follows line to descent, through his son, Zachariah Pauley (1795-1868), and grandson James Layton Pauley (1825-1908), to the author's grandfather, Barton William Pauley (1852-1905). He was born at Monticello, Indiana, and migrated to Benton County, Iowa, with his family in 1854. He and his wife, Lucinda Rice (1854-1833), had three sons, 1879-1889. Descendants lived in Iowa and elsewhere.

Includes other ancestral lines of the author's grandfather and father, Dr. James Leroy Pauley (1889-1962). Ancestors include: William Caldwell (ca. 1730-after 1810) of Ireland, Pennsylvania, and Nicholas County, Kentucky -- John Crooks (d. 1805) of Ireland and Franklin County, Pennsylvania -- William Hinton (ca. 1662-1695) of Wiltshire, England, and Anne Arundel County, Maryland -- Ellis Hughes (1776-1850) of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Monticello, Indiana.
