This book includes "only those individuals who spell their surname "Ridenhour" or who descend from individuals who spell their surname "Ridenhour".... Two major lines of Ridenhours have been identified within the United States: one evolved from a family that settled in North Carolina in about 1780 and the other originates from the settlement of a family in Missouri in 1799."--p. 2.

"The Ridenhours of North Carolina have been able to trace their ancestry ... back to ... Nicolas (Klaus) Reitnauer who was born about 1650 in Switzerland.... The sixth child of Nicolas ... was Johannes who was born in Tieffenbach [France] on 5 March 1690. Johannes married Maria Catherine Bendler 21 April 1716 in Tieffenbach and they had at least 13 children. Johannes and Maria ... emigrated with their surviving children (at least four had died), excepting two sons who remained in France, to America in 1739.... It was not until 1764 that the two remaining sons ... came to America."--p. 6.

"The Missouri Ridenhour line was started by John and Christiana (Zumalt) Ridenhour who settled in Missouri in 1799. The first information about John and Christiana ... is when they were married in Rockingham Country at the southern end of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia in 1786."--p. 7.
