Civil War diary, 1861-1864, of James William Covington, who served with the 14th Infantry Regiment of Illinois Volunteers. Apparently he played a horn in the Regimental Band, but was also assigned regular guard duties, etc. James was born in Zanesville, Ohio, and moved with his folks to Exeter, Scott County, Illinois. After the war, he settled at Bardolph, Illinois, and married Sara Matilda Collison in 1875. During the Civil War, he served in Missouri, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama, spending quite a bit of time in Memphis, Vicksburg, Natchez, and Huntsville. Includes family group records of ancestors and descendants.
