"The first Presbyterian Church in the area was called Union and is first listed in 1837. In 1865 Rev. George W. Leyburn visited Union Church eight miles west of Appomattox and finding them seriously weakened by the war explored the Court House area and began preaching services there. He served also Union and Walker's. After a series of special services in the spring of 1867 in the new church building at the Court House, a petition was presented to West Hanover Presbytery for an organization." -- prelim. material.
