Miss Caroline Jackson Lee (1864-1947), who died at Washington, D.C., was born in King George County, Virginia, the youngest of six children born to Baldwin Lee (1820-1868) and Caroline Potts Lee (1824-1901). All of the Lee children died intestate without issue. Miss Lee owned 281 acres of timberland in King George County. By Virginia law, precedes from the land was to go equally to her paternal and maternal kindred. The research on which this book is based was done to find her heirs-at-law.

Miss Lee's paternal grandfather, James Lee (ca. 1777-1851), a soldier in the War of 1812, was the son of James Lee (d. 1790), a resident of King George County, Virginia. He married Mary Mahorney in 1800. They had fourteen children, 1801-1824. Descendants lived in Virginia, Maryland, New York, Oklahoma, California, Washington, D.C. and elsewhere.

Richard Potts (ca. 1753-1823) and William Potts (ca. 1755-1829), sons of Richard Potts (d. 1790) of Stafford County, Virginia, moved to King George County, Virginia, during the Revolutionary War. Richard married Elizabeth Alsop Barrett, widow of John Barrett, ca. 1775. They had six children, 1776-1787. William Potts married Batsy Wilkerson, ca. 1783. They had three children. Their son, William Potts, Jr. (ca. 1785-1841), Miss Lee's grandfather, was born in King George County, Virginia. He married Jane Rogers, in 1817. They had eight children, 1817-1835. His descendants were the heirs-in-law of Miss Lee. Descendants lived in Virginia, Texas, California, Iowa and elsewhere.
