Nancy Powell Hawkins' father, Golson Powell (1818-1865) was born in Kentucky, the son of Lewis Powell (1776-1840) and Milly Bottom Powell (1771-1854). Her mother, Mary Coulter Powell, was the daughter of Thomas Coulter (1783-1862) and Nancy Prewitt Coulter (1791-1860). Her parents were married in 1839 in Boyle County, Kentucky, and resided at Ferguson, Missouri. The record is chiefly a report on research in Virginia and Kentucky for her ancestry, with extracts of public records.

Ancestors include: John Bottom (d. ca. 1737) of Henrico County, Virginia; Anthony Gholson (d. ca. 1764) of Spotsylvania and Orange Counties, Virginia; William Sandidge (d. 1747) of Caroline and Spotsylvania Counties, Virginia; Isham Pruitt (ca. 1730-1805) of Lunenburgh and Charlotte Counties, Virginia, and Kentucky; and Charles Powell (ca. 1740-1810), a Revolutionary War soldier, of Virginia and Kentucky.
