Bartholomew Smith of Frederick Co., Virginia, came from Holland to Frederick City, Maryland, in 1765 when he joined his maternal relatives, the Everharts of Wurtenberg, who had previously taken out warrents for land there. The Smith family were natives of Stuttgart, members of which found refuge in Holland during the period of religious persecutions in Germany. A family of this name whose head was also Bartholomew Smith, comb manufacturer, resided in England and adopted the English spelling of the name but later returned to Holland. Bartholomew Smith was accompanied by three brothers, Michael, George, and Nicholas, all of whom became residents of Maryland. Bartholomew Smith married, first, Catherine Everhart of Maryland who died in 1784. He married, secondly, Margaret Haymaker, on November 6, 1792. Bartholomew died January 28, 1819.

Descendants are located in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and elsewhere.
