"Marriage book 1 of St. Joseph County, Indiana, has been lost since 1948 and the the marriage licenses disappered several years ago. The index and page numbers in this work correspond exactly to the index of marriages, vol. 1, in the clerk's office in the court house of St. Joseph County, Indiana. The names are the same, but a few notes have been added where the clerk's entry differs from the original name. This work has been done over a period of twelve years, while searching for each marriage, much information of interest was found, and has been added. The sources are newpapers, wills, deeds, cemeteries, and 1850 censuses of St. Joseph, La Porte, Elkhart, Marshall, and Lake Counties, Indiana, and Berrien County, Michigan; as well as the Histories of St. Joseph, La Porte, and Elkhart Counties. Where no information has been added, those early settlers either died or moved away before 1850 ...".
