"This index eliminates the necessity of searching for a name, as it contains all the names in the CENSUS, including the heads of families with whom the pensioners resided. Its arrangement is alphabetical by surname, and below each surname appears the Christian name followed by the number of the page or pages where the name will be found in the CENSUS. An asterisk after the name indicates that the person was the head of a family with whom the pensioner resided"--About this book, p. 1.

This index does not include ages or places of residence as found in the original census publication of 1841.
