Enfield was first called Fresh Water Plantation and was a part of Massachusetts until 1749 when it was annexed to Connecticut. The name was changed to Enfield when the First Ecclesiastical Society and Church were organized in 1683. The first settled minister was "set apart for the work in 1699". The First Ecclesiastical Society was legally constituted in Connecticut in 1753. In 1770 the Second Society of Strict Congregationalists or Separates was established and continued as a distinct organization with the limits of the First Society until about 1843. In 1855 ninety-four members of the First Church requested to be dismissed that they might form the North or Second Church of Enfield. That organization existed for about twenty-three years.
