William Anderson was born in 1706 of Scotch parents. He emigrated from County Antrim, Ireland, with his wife, Rebecca Denny, and their sons, John and David, ca. 1742. Four other children were born in America. The family settled first in Chester County, Pennsylvania; later migrating to Waxhaws, South Carolina, and finially to Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He was murdered by a group of Tories in 1783.

James Mason Anderson, known as "Tyger Jim", was born 28 January 1784, the son of Maj. David Anderson and Miriam Mayson Anderson, and grandson of William Anderson, in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He married Mary "Polly" Miller, daughter of Michael and Nancy Vernon Miller, in 1810. They had ten children. He died 24 June 1870. Descendants lived in South Carolina, Georgia, and elsewhere.
