Newsletter for the interchange of genealogical data and history of the Spiker families of German and Swiss ancestry, with focus on descendants and relatives of William Raphael (W.R.) Spiker and Margaret Ann Groves Spiker. William was born in 1839 in Shenandoah County, Virginia to Jacob Spiker (Speicher) and Elizabeth Hinkins. In 1864, William joined the Union Army's 73rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company H at Logansport, Cass County, Indiana and fought in the Civil war. In 1866, William married Margaret Ann Groves, the daughter of Mary Groves also of Shenandoah County, Virginia. They were married at the home of Rev. Jacob Hott near Whitehall, Frederick County, Virginia. William and Margaret's eight children were Arthur L., Amos, the twins James William and Clarence Edward, Margaret "Maggie," Gertrude "Girty," Ivy G., and Mary E. Their last two daughters died before the age of 2. William and Margaret settled in Berkeley County, West Virginia at the Washington Gold Farm (McKown Dairy), and later moved to the intersection of Tablers Station Road and Horner Sawmill Road, just southwest of Arden, Berkeley County, West Virginia. Margaret Ann G. Spiker died in 1922. Her husband, William died in 1928, and was buried at the Gerrardstown Presbyterian Church's cemetery in Berkeley County. Later descendants also lived in Quebec (Canada), Norway, and in California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington D.C., West Virginia, and elsewhere. Information was extracted from autobiographies, Bible records, census records, church records, court records, diaries, marriage registers, military records, obituaries, property tax records, and other published sources. Years covered are 1700-the present.
