To use the general index to births: cards are arranged in alphabetical order by the first letter of the last name. The abbreviations are as follows: M-Male, F-Female, W-White, C-Colored, Vol-Volume, P-Page, Cert-Certificate, NLR-No local records. The 4 or 5 digit number on some cards has no meaning to the local custodian. Cards sometimes give the fathers' or mothers' names, in addition to the child's name.

Most volumes individually indexed. Some volumes names are listed alphabetically by last name within month.
