Family Tree: What's New

Improved merge experience
We’ve made important updates to the merging process in Family Tree to help preserve data integrity and enhance the overall user experience.

What's changed
In the previous merge experience:

  • Only memories, notes, and ordinances were automatically copied to the surviving person.
  • If one person had a conclusion (such as a birth date or place) that the other did not, that conclusion was not copied over automatically.

With the new merge experience:

  • All relationships and sources are now copied, in addition to memories, notes, and ordinances.
  • If only one person has a conclusion, that conclusion is now automatically copied to the surviving person.

Why this matters
A common challenge with merges was the accidental loss of valuable information. The improved experience copies more data by default and preserves important details.

This update lets you focus on merging duplicates without having to clean up the details at the same time. We recommend correcting mistakes before the merge rather than during it and reviewing the resulting record carefully afterward

Family group trees
Family group trees are now available to all Family Tree users. You no longer need to go to FamilySearch Labs to share a tree with your living family members.

Improved group management
Creating, managing, and collaborating within family groups has been improved and expanded. Groups can now share a tree, select a preferred tree, and stay informed through a family feed.

New fan chart
We've updated the fan chart while keeping all of the features you currently love. The appearance has been slightly refined.

  • Colors. Colors have been toned down a bit. The text is now black on a white background, which improves contrast and readability.
  • Options menu. The Options menu retains the same items, but its appearance has been updated.
  • Dark Mode. The Invert Colors option has been replaced with Dark mode. (Click the  to switch.) When on, both fan chart and background become darkened. Previously, only the background darkened.
