The Fan Chart view has several advantages:
- You can see up to 7 generations of your ancestors all at once.
- You can identify where family lines end—in other words, where information is missing.
- You can see in what countries different ancestors were born, and which ancestors have photos, stories, and sources attached to the person pages.
- You can both view the fan chart on screen and convert it to a PDF file for printing.
Steps (website)
- In the top menu, click Family Tree, and then click Tree.
- In the top-right portion of the pedigree view, click the name of the current view (Landscape, for example), and then click Fan Chart.
- Click the Settings icon
to do the following:
- Select the number of generations to display.
- Select whether you want the chart to display Family Lines, Birth Place, Sources, Stories, Photos, or Research Helps.
- Invert the colors.
- Print the fan chart for up to 7 generations (4 is the minimum). The printed chart includes the information that you see on the screen.
- If the main person had more than 5 children, click > to see the rest.
- To move a different person to the chart's center position, click the person's name, and then click the Fan chart icon.
Steps for Family Tree mobile app
- In the lower-right of your pedigree, tap
- In the Pedigree View box, tap .
- In the lower-right, click the blue options icon
- Tap to select how to display the chart: Default view, Birth Country, Sources, Stories, Photos, Research Helps.
- (Optional) If the main person had more than 5 children, tap > to see the rest.
- (Optional) You can move a different person to the main position. Tap and hold the name, and then tap View Tree or View This Tree.
Android-Only
- In the lower-right, tap the blue options icon.
- Below the chart, tap [number] Generations.
- Tap to select the number of generations you want to display.
