Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen - Culling Evidence From Freedman's Bank Postmortem Records
The Freedman’s Savings Bank was a bank chartered with the same high moral goals as the Freedmen’s Bureau, offering a social service to formerly enslaved citizenry. In recent years, family historians have leveraged account opening data to confirm emancipation locations, extended family, military service and more. Less known and researched are the records associated with the Bank’s closure post 1874. Federal agencies, legislation and documentation created to restore losses of depositors and their descendants was collated for over 50 years, well into the 20th century. Attendees will learn where and how to access these records that provide paths for primary evidence exploration with genealogical significance to African American researchers
Participants of this session will benefit most from knowing about post Civil War efforts of the US Government to assist formerly enslaved citizens. Resources for learning about this topic can be found under Additional Experiences.

Intersecting Lines: Pedigree Collapse Helps Identify an Ancestor’s Parents
Documentary evidence often leads to several parental candidates for an ancestor. Although pedigree collapse can sometimes lead to confusion, it can also be helpful in some cases. This class will highlight DNA tools that can be used to analyze shared DNA and provide a case study that illustrates how and when pedigree collapse can be useful in ancestral research. This advanced-level session is sponsored by ICAPGen and BCG. Participants attending this session will need to have a basic understanding of autosomal DNA inheritance. Opening the Door to Latin American Genealogical Research with Full-text Searches
Almost all the valuable genealogical records from Latin America such as parish registers and civil registration records are in a narrative format and have been very difficult to search. Notary records are seldom used for the same reason, they are usually entirely handwritten narratives. New handwriting analysis technology coupled with full-text searches are on the way to making the content of these handwritten documents more available to computer searches. The advent of full-text searches will have a tremendous impact on opening these records to researchers. This class will explain and demonstrate the advantages of this new technology. Participants of this session should have a general knowledge of how to research using the FamilySearch website. Resources for learning how to use FamilySearch can be found under Additional Experiences. - ДистанционноОчноВсе уровни2025
Ancient DNA meets genealogy: How 23andMe’s Historical Matches feature connects you to the past
Over the past two decades, the study of ancient DNA (aDNA) has transformed the field of genetics, enabling researchers to make major discoveries, including identifying connections to Neanderthals and other archaic humans, discovering previously unknown migrations and even shedding light on the origins of ancient diseases. Recent breakthroughs in aDNA technology—including those pioneered by 23andMe researchers—now make it possible to identify direct genetic connections between living people and their historical relatives. Taught by an expert with over ten years of experience generating and analyzing aDNA, in this course we will discuss what makes aDNA unique, what it means to share a genetic connection (or “historical match”) to historical individuals, and how these historical matches can empower genealogical research. We’ll also discuss how 23andMe customers can learn about their own historical matches via the 23andMe Historical Matches feature and help contribute to new aDNA research.

The Ayes Have It - Discovering Your Ancestors Through Voting Records
In 1870, 155 years ago, the 15th Amendment was passed prohibiting the exclusion of citizens from voting based on race, color, or previous condition of servitude. In 1920, just 105 years ago, the 19th Amendment was passed granting women the right to vote. And, in 1965, 60 years ago, the Voting Rights Act was passed prohibiting racial discrimination in voting. Each of these pieces of legislation increased the opportunity of US citizens to exercise their right to vote. Voting records are not one of the record sets that you usually think of for your genealogy research but since they are collected on a regular basis they can be used to replace the 1890 US Census or fill in details between censuses. These records may contain information that can help you discover naturalization, land, migration, and death records, as well as family relationships, property ownership, or provide evidence of criminal convictions or mental states of your ancestors. - ДистанционноОчноВсе уровни2025
