Art Newman left us peacefully on June 15th, 2010 at his home in Kelseyville. He was 94 years of age.

Born Arthur L. Newman in the gold mining town of Giltedge, Montana, "Uncle Art" spent the majority of his youth in Washington State and California. He graduated from Bellingham High School in 1934 and then enrolled in Western Washington State. In 1941, while living in San Francisco, he met the love of his life Anne Johnson. They remained happily married for 68 years until Anne's passing in 2009.

At an early age, Art became fascinated with flying. Many hurdles lie in his way, but Art, built of strong will and determination, was accepted into the Navy Flight Training Program. In 1945, after completion of the US Naval Flight training program, he was assigned to a squadron stationed in the South Pacific where he piloted a Torpedo Bomber.

His love of flying didn't end with his Naval service as he continued with this passion into his long career as a helicopter pilot. He was published in Time Life Magazine as the first pilot to fly underneath the Golden Gate Bridge (1952).

Art had a passion for his Pear and Walnut Orchards, for telling witty jokes, and would lend an old story for anyone who would listen. He was filled with love from his surviving brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Steve & Marilou Johnson of Clayton, California, and his many loving nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Donations can be made to the Lakeport Senior Center or Kelseyville Presbyterian Church.
