Legend of Asmund Torleivsson Rygnestad

There is much in tradition about Åsmund. He lived in the memory of people as Vonde Åsmund. Some of the legends about him were perhaps true; most of them are perhaps fictitious. Some of them are typical of the migratory legends. It is possible to read about him in many sources: Johannes Skar’s “Gamalt or Setesdal”, Olaf Benneche’s trilogy about “Rygnesstadgutten” Olav O. Rygnestad/s booklet “Rygnestadguten” Augund Rike’s “Rygnestadloftet”, and many newspaper articles, to mention a few sources.
The legends report that he was abroad -- down in Europe -- as a soldier during his early years, and that he brought back from there much of that which was displayed in the museum at Rygnestad. It may be true, but the sources that present this information are not available.
That which is certainly known is that the areas of Setesdal in the 1500s were not isolated outskirts where people did not know about anything except their own dark røykstoger (“simple dwellings, usually made of logs, containing an open fireplace at the center of the room, with a smoke hole directly above”) and believed that the world ended where the River Otre ran into the lake. Norwegian historians who sat at their desks had such an understanding of this valley and of the people who lived there as mountaineers. That impression has not been easy to change.
The legends report that Åsmund had a sister whose name was Sissel. That report should not be ignored, but there is no information that can verify it. -- See something about this folklore regarding Sissel under Nomeland V, residence #3.
Tradition also says that the wife of Åsmund was from Nomeland --V -- and that has been verified by the sources. On the other hand she was not named Hæge, as it has been reported, but Jorunn. It is fairly certain that she was the daughter of Eivind Arnesson Nomeland -- see the introduction to the history of the operators at that gard. In a case from 1635, the opinion was stated that Jorunn had then been dead for four years. She and Åsmund had many children.
