The International Genealogical Index (IGI) was a precursor to FamilySearch indexing. The index contains two kinds of information:
Community Indexed IGI. Information transcribed from various historical documents from many countries and organizations. The collection tends to cover the time frame of the early 1500s to 1885. In November 2014, FamilySearch added the community indexed IGI records as sources to Family Tree. If you click a source title, you see this message, “This extracted IGI record was used to create this person.” Search the index at https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/igi.
Community Contributed IGI. Information derived from family records submitted to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by its members. The members gave the best information available at the time. However, the data is not documented. Before you rely on it, carefully review the data and find sources to verify it.
