How do I use the discussions feature in Family Tree?

The Discussion board is a tool on the FamilySearch website for communicating with other users about a shared ancestor. Use it to share research, ask questions, and resolve any entries on an ancestor’s Person page that do not appear to be correct.

Remember to be courteous in your comments. Others cannot delete your comments. You can delete a discussion that you added.

Steps (website)

  1. In Family Tree on the FamilySearch.org website, display the person page of the person whose discussions you want to use.
  2. Click the Collaborate tab
  3. To start a new discussion, follow these steps:
    1. At the top of the Discussion box, click + Add Discussion
    2. Enter a discussion title followed by a description. Ask a question so you can understand a particular detail about your ancestor.
    3. Click Save
  4. You can delete a discussion that you started:
    1. Click the Edit icon next to the discussion you want to delete.
    2. Click Delete Discussion.
    3. Enter a reason statement, and click Delete.
  5. To comment on an existing discussion, follow these steps:
    1. Click the discussion that you would like to participate in. 
    2. Click View Comments.
    3. Scroll to read through previous comments. To comment, type in your comment, and click the send icon .
  6. To delete a comment that you have made, follow these steps:
    1. Click the comment.
    2. Click Delete.

Steps (mobile app)

The Family Tree mobile app does not yet support discussions. Be sure to use the website.
