What do I do with record hints in Family Tree that are not a match?

Record hints point you to historical records that potentially refer to a person in your family tree. At times, you could see hints that do not apply to your family.

If you find a record hint that does not apply to anyone in your tree, dismiss the hint. Dismissing prevents others from attaching the record by mistake.

Do not dismiss the record hint if you attached a similar record hint. Attach it instead. If you dismiss duplicate record hints, the hinting system is less reliable in finding record hints in the future about a person.

Steps (website)

  1. Click the record hint. A summary box appears with details about the record hint.
  2. Click Review and Attach.
  3. Compare the names, dates, relationships, and locations.
  4. If the record is about a different person, click Not a Match. Enter an explanation of why the record is not a match and click Save.
  5. If the hint still appears for on the person's Tree profile, refresh the browser page.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. From a person's details screen, tap the blue record hint icon. Or tap the blue icon in a Tasks list.
  2. Tap a hint title.
  3. Tap Compare.
  4. Compare the names, dates, relationships, and locations on both sides of the record.
  5. If the record is about a different person, tap Not a Match.
  6. Explain why the record is not a match.
  7. Tap Save.
