What do I do with record hints in Family Tree that aren't a match?

Record hints point you to historical records that may refer to a person in your family tree. However, if the person's record on Family Tree is missing vital information, includes a very common name, or has incorrect information, you may see hints that do not apply.

If you find a record hint that doesn’t apply to anyone in your tree, go ahead and dismiss the hint so that no one attaches it by mistake.

Do not dismiss the record hint if you have already attached a similar record hint. Attach it instead. Dismissing duplicate record hints may prevent the hinting system from finding record hints in the future about this person.

Steps (website)

  1. Click the record hint. A summary box appears with details about the record hint.
  2. Click Review and Attach.
  3. For each person, click the down arrow that appears between the record and the Family Tree sides. Compare the names, dates, relationships, and locations.
  4. If the record is about a different person, click Not a Match.
  5. Enter a statement to explain why the record is not a match.
  6. Click Save.
  7. If the hint still appears for the person, refresh the browser page to remove it.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. Tap the record hint. A summary box appears with details about the record hint.
  2. Tap the record hint.
  3. Tap Review and Attach.
  4. Compare the names, dates, relationships, and locations on both sides of the record.
  5. If the record is about a different person, click Not a Match.
  6. Enter a statement to explain why the record is not a match.
  7. Tap Save.
