How do I use the suggested place function in indexing?

The suggested place function helps you correctly enter the name of event places that you see mentioned in a historical record. It reduces spelling errors and improves the search results for other users who might later search for the person listed in the record.

Steps

  1. Continue indexing until you come to a data field that requires the name of a geographic location—place of birth, for example, or place of death.
  2. Begin typing the name of the event place.
  3. As you type, a list of suggested places will appear.
  4. Select the location that best matches the location mentioned in the record.
    • If there are no matches, continue typing what you see on the record.
    • Correct any spelling errors that you encounter.
    • Expand abbreviations, if you know the complete name of the place.
    • When writing the place name, do not include terms such as "village", "municipality" or "municipal district".

Note: If the place of birth was not recorded or a variation of the word "unknown" was entered, press Ctrl + B to mark this field blank.
