How do I use Relatives Around Me in the Family Tree mobile app?

Relatives Around Me is a feature unique to the Family Tree mobile app. The feature shows your relationship to other people near you who are also using the Family Tree mobile app. Relationships display based on FamilySearch Family Tree.

Before you start, here are things to know:

  • All users who want to participate must sign in to the Family Tree mobile app.

    • Apple iOS: In the bottom-right corner, tap 3 lines.
  2. Tap Relatives Around Me.

  4. Tap Scan for relatives (Apple iOS devices) or Scan for Friends (Android devices), Wait as your device connects with other devices.

Troubleshooting

Here are some reasons that the app does not find any relatives within 100 feet (30.5 meters) of you:

  • No one within 100 feet (30.5 meters) of you has a common deceased ancestor in FamilySearch Family Tree.
  • A participant's mobile device lacks the FamilySearch Family Tree app, so the app cannot detect the person.
  • You or a relative lacks the Internet or a data plan activated on the mobile device.
  • The GPS on your mobile device is not working or activated. Check your settings.

The Relatives Around Me feature does not display the location of other users. The app uses location only to determine if the device is near others who are using this feature. Your location is never shown or stored.
