How do I upload audio files?

Audio recordings are some of the most precious memories you can have. A recording of a relative’s voice is invaluable. Upload it to FamilySearch so that you can share it with other relatives and so that you always have a backup.

You can upload audio to FamilySearch using the FamilySearch.org website, Family Tree mobile app, and Memories mobile app.

FamilySearch supports these file types:

  • .m4a (Please note that Firefox cannot play m4a files on Mac, iOS, or Android devices.)
  • .mp3
  • .wav

The maximum audio file size is 15 MB.

Note: After saving an audio recording, you may see a message attached to the memory that says, "Processing failed. Delete and re-upload, or contact support." In certain instances, this message is incorrect, and you may be able to play the audio file. If so, consider contacting support to have the message removed. You do not need to delete the memory.

Steps (website)

You can upload audio files from either Memories or Tree.

Here's how you upload an audio file from the Memories section:

  1. After signing in to FamilySearch, go to the menu bar at the top of the screen, and click Memories.
  2. In the drop-down, click Gallery.
  3. Click the plus sign (+) in the green circle.
  4. Drag and drop content from your computer to the screen, or click Choose Files
  5. Tag the file to the person in Family Tree that the audio file is either of or about.

Here's how you upload an audio file from the Tree section:

  1. After signing in to FamilySearch, go to the menu bar at the top of the screen, and click Tree.
  2. In the drop-down, click Tree
  3. Find the person, click on the person's name, and click Person.
  4. Click the Memories tab.
  5. To add a file that has not already been uploaded to FamilySearch, click Upload Audio. Or click Select from Gallery to add an item you have already uploaded. The drag and drop feature is not available to upload memory items on the person detail page.
  6. If you use an unsupported browser or your file exceeds the file size limit, a message in red appears to alert you.

The audio file is already tagged to the person that you selected in Family Tree.

Steps (mobile app)

You can record new audio files and upload them using both the Family Tree and Memories mobile apps. Neither app currently has an option to add prerecorded files. If you already have audio files, upload them using the FamilySearch website.

A good question can spark an incredible story. Both FamilySearch mobile apps provide interview questions to spark memories.

Here is how you can use the Memories app to record and upload an audio file:

  1. In the Memories mobile app, tap +.
  2. Tap Record Audio.
  3. (Optional) Tap a question. If you do not see a question that you want to answer, tap Begin Recording.
  4. Tap Start.
  5. Record the answer.
  6. Tap Done.
  7. Enter a title, and tap OK.
  8. Tag the file to the person in Family Tree that the audio file is either of or about.

Here is how you can use the Family Tree mobile app to record and upload an audio file:

  1. Tap on an individual to open the person detail page.
  2. Tap Memories.
  3. Tap the plus sign (+) in the green circle.
  4. (Optional) Tap a question. If you do not see a question that you want to answer, tap Begin Recording.
  5. Tap Start.
  6. Record the answer.
  7. Tap Done.
  8. Enter a title, and tap OK.
