How do I search historical records for an ancestor in Family Tree?

A simple way to find historical records for a specific ancestor is to search from the person page in Family Tree. If you find records, you can use the source linker to attach them as a source in Family Tree.

When you start a search from Family Tree, the name and other search criteria are filled out for you.

Steps (website)

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.org, and navigate to the appropriate Person page.
  2. In the Search Records section on the right, click FamilySearch. A list of historical records appears based on the information in the Family Tree record. You can modify the search in the right panel.
  3. In the search results, click a name to view record details.
  4. Review the information and the image, if available.
  5. If the source applies to your ancestor, click Attach to Family Tree. If the source is already attached, you see who it is attached to. Click the paper with a paper clip icon and review the attachment.
  6. Use the source linker to attach the source.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, find and tap the name of an ancestor.
  2. In the top-right corner of the screen, tap the 3 dots.
  3. Tap search records.
  4. Tap FamilySearch.
