How do I send a message to someone who contributed to Family Tree or Memories?

You can contact a person who contributed to Family Tree or Memories. Keep in mind that in certain cases we are unable to identify the contributor. The contribution could have come from a previous system that did not record contributors, or the contributor could be deceased.

Steps (website)

To display the recent changes and contact the contributor of the information in FamilySearch:

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.org.
  2. Navigate to the profile of the person.
  3. Under the person's name, click Details.
  4. On the right side of the screen, scroll down to Latest Changes.
    Note: To expand the Latest Changes box, click the arrow on the right.
  5. Click Show All. Latest Changes displays each item of entered data.
  6. In the Date column, click the name of the contributor. A chat window pops up with a reference and link to the memory.
    Note: (Optional) To add the contributor to your contact list, click Add Contact.
  7. Click the Chat button.
  8. Write your message in the Message box.
  9. Click the send arrow.
    Note: If someone is sending you unwanted messages, you can mute, hide, or block that person. You cannot see messages from a blocked person.

To display and contact the contributor of a memory in FamilySearch:

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.org.
  2. Navigate to the profile of the person.
  3. Under the person's name, click Memories.
  4. Click the memory item.
  5. On the right side of the memory, in the Details panel, under "Contributed by", click the name of the contributor. A pop-out window with the contributor's information appears.
  6. Note: (Optional) To add the contributor to your contact list, click Add Contact.
  7. Click the Chat button. A chat window pops up with a reference and link to the memory.
  8. Write your message in the Message box.
  9. Click the send arrow.

Steps (mobile app)

Display and contact the contributor of a memory in the Family Tree mobile app:

  1. Open the Family Tree mobile app.
  2. Navigate to the profile of the person.
  3. Tap Memories.
  4. Tap a memory item.
  5. In the lower left, tap the name of the contributor. If you do not see it, tap in the memory item.
  6. (Optional) To add the contributor to your contact list, tap Add Contact.
  7. Tap the Chat button. A chat window pops up with a reference and link to the memory.
  8. Write your message in the Message box.
  9. Tap the send arrow.

Display and contact the contributor of a recent change to a person's information in the Family Tree mobile app:

  1. Open the Family Tree mobile app.
  2. Navigate to the profile of the person.
  3. In the upper right, tap the 3 dots.
  4. Tap Recent Changes.
  5. Find the change in question and tap the contributor's name. A chat window appears with the contributor's contact information.
  6. Tap the blue Chat box. A chat window pops up with a reference and link to the memory.
  7. In the Send a message box, enter your message.
  8. Tap the blue send arrow.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

Family Tree Lite shows you who contributed information. You do not see contact information or the option to send a message. Please use the full website.
