How do I contact or message a user who contributed to Family Tree or Memories?

Family Tree is collaborative. We build it together. From time to time, you might want to communicate with another user who has contributed information about your ancestors. Here is how to find another user’s contact information or send another user a message using FamilySearch’s messaging service.

Keep in mind that sometimes this service is not available, such as in cases where we cannot identify the other patron or we believe that he or she cannot respond. This could be a contribution that came from a previous system or an instance where the contributor may be deceased.

Please view our Terms of Use for guidelines about collaborating with other users.

Steps (website)

  1. In Family Tree or Memories, display the contributor of the information:
    • In Family Tree, from the ancestor's person page, in the Vitals or Other Information section, you see the words “Last Changed,” followed by the date of the most recent change and the contact name of the contributor who made it.
    • In Memories, click a memory that you did not contribute. The contributor's contact name is in the Details box.
  2. Click the contributor’s contact name.
    • Note: If the contact name is listed as “FamilySearch,” then the change was made by an automatic update or before FamilySearch kept track of each contributor’s changes.
  3. In the pop-up that appears, you see the user’s contact information, if the user made it public. You can use it to contact him or her.
  4. (Optional): See how you are related to the contributor:
    • Enable Relationship Viewing: If you are not opted in to the service, click this link to opt in.
    • View My Relationship: If you and the other person are opted in to this service, click it to see your relationship.
    • Request to View Relationship: If the other user has not opted in, click to invite the other user to opt in so you can view your relationship.
  5. If the contributor did not provide contact information, send a private message through the FamilySearch messaging service instead:
    1. Click Send Message.
    2. Enter your subject and message. You must enter a subject in order for the message to send.
    3. Click Send.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, find the person you are interested in, and tap the name.
  2. Tap the information that interests you.
    • From an ancestor’s person page, tap any of the blue, hyperlinked facts that interest you—a name, for example, or birth date, death date, or residence. Towards the bottom of the screen (if you don’t see it, be sure to scroll), you see the date that the information was last modified. Below the date, you see the contact name of the person who made the change.
    • Tap Memories. Tap a memory that you did not contribute. Tap it again. The contact name of the person who contributed it appears below the photo along the left side.
  3. Tap the contributor’s contact name.
    • Note: If the contact name is listed as “FamilySearch,” then the change was made by an automatic update or before FamilySearch kept track of each contributor’s changes.
  4. If the contributor provided contact information, you can use it to contact him or her.
  5. (Optional): See how you are related to the contributor:
    • Enable Relationship Viewing: If you are not opted in to the service, tap this option to opt in.
    • View My Relationship: If both you and the other user are opted in to the service, tap this option to see how you are related.
    • Request to View Relationship: If you are opted in to this service but the other user is not, tap this option to send the other user a message requesting that he or she opt in.
  6. If the contributor did not provide contact information, send a private message through the FamilySearch messaging service instead:
    1. Tap Send a Message.
    2. Enter your subject and message.  You must enter a subject in order for your message to send.
    3. Tap Send.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

Family Tree Lite shows you who contributed information. It currently does not provide contact information or the option to send a message. Please sign in at the website or on the Family Tree mobile app, and follow the instructions above.
