On the source linker, the people are listed according to their relationship to a focus person. The focus person is listed with his or her spouse. Parents appear in a section above, children and siblings in the sections below.
Some historical records identify in-laws, grandparents, grandchildren, and other family members who are not displayed on the right side of the screen. To deal with these family members, you change the focus person.
For example, a marriage record might list the bride and groom and each of their parents. When you first display the source linker, the bride may be the focus person. When you are ready to work on the husband’s information, make him the focus person instead.
- While using the source linker on the FamilySearch.org website, click the Change link on the left side of the screen.
- Click the person you want.
- On the right side of the screen, click the Change link.
- Click the person you want, or enter his or her ID number.
Steps (mobile app)
There is not a way to change the focus person on the mobile app, since the record hint that you selected is meant for a specific individual. Rather than changing the focus person, as you might do on the website, the mobile app will automatically begin the attaching process over again for each individual included in the record hint. This will give you a chance to attach the record to any other matching individuals included on the record.
Note: Watch for cases when the record hint does not line up with the right individual, such as a census where a child has the same name as a deceased sibling. Since there is no option for changing the focus person on this screen, you can select Not a match for that particular individual and then go into their record later to attach the source. In these cases, it may be more simple to attach the record hint from the website.
Steps (Family Tree Lite)
Family Tree Lite does not have record hints.
