How do I add or edit the title of a photo, story, document, or audio file?

Add titles to the memories that you contribute to help distinguish them from other memories. Titles make the memories easier to find and helps viewers understand their importance. If you change your mind about a particular title, you can edit it.  

Note: You can add or edit titles for memories that you contributed. You are unable to add or edit titles for memories contributed by other users.                  

Suggestions for useful titles

  • Keep them short but relevant.
  • Place additional information in the Description field.
  • Do not list all of the people in an item. Create tags instead.
  • Helpful titles often include the following types of information: 
    • The name of the person or family group (such as "family of," "siblings of," "children of," "descendants of")
    • An event, such as a birthday, reunion, funeral, or holiday
    • A place, such as a home, church, or cemetery
    • A reason the memory was created, such as a school photo or passport photo.
    • A document type, such as a marriage certificate, letter, obituary, or gravestone
    • A reference or explanation, such as a "transcription of a journal entry" or a "translation of a letter."

Steps (website)

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch
  2. At the top of the page, click Memories.
  3. Click Gallery.
  4. Find the memory item without a title. 
  5. Click No Title.
  6. Enter the title.
  7. Click away from the title field to automatically save it.

To change the title:

  1. Click the memory.
  2. To the right of the memory title, click Edit.
  3. Change the title.

Steps (Memories or Tree mobile app)

  1. In the Memories app, tap a memory item. On the tree app, navigate to a person page and open the Memories tab. Then tap the memory.
  2. Tap Add a title. If you do not see Add a Title, tap in the memory item and then tap Add a title.
    1. Apple iOS device: enter the title and tap Save.
    2. Android device: tap in the Title field and add the title. Tap Save.
  3. To change the title, tap it, and enter the change. Tap Save.
  4. For stories, tap the three dots in the top-right corner, and tap Edit or Edit Story. Then tap the title, and enter the change. Tap Save.
