How do I rotate a photo or document in Memories?

You can rotate most of the photos or document images that you upload via the FamilySearch Memories tab or the Person Page Memories tab.

  • Only the contributor can rotate photos or document images.
  • You can only rotate images with .jpg, .tif, or .png file extensions. 
  • You can rotate documents with the .pdf file extension or images with the .bmp extension.
  • If you rotate images from your Gallery or Person Page, this action affects all instances of the image in Family Tree.
  • If you rotate documents from your Gallery or Person Page, this action is not permanent.
  • If you rotate images with the built-in Windows Photo software, they do not show correctly in Memories.

Instructions for images:

  1. Find the image in the Memories Gallery.
  2. Click the image that you want to rotate.
  3. At the top, between the title and the image, click Actions
  4. Click Rotate Left or Rotate Right. Each click rotates the image a quarter turn.
  5. Resize and reposition tags as necessary.

Instructions for documents:

  1. Find and click document in the Memories Gallery.
  2. Click the square with a half circle arrow above the document.

Steps (mobile app)

  1. Open the Family Tree or Memories app on your Android or Apple iOS device.
  2. Find and tap the image you want to rotate.
  3. In the top-right, tap the 3 dots icon.
  4. Tap Rotate Right. Each tap rotates the image a quarter turn.
