The Smuggler King

The Smuggler King tells the story of Thomas Armstrong, an 18th century customs officer in the north-east of England who patrolled the coast on his ship trying to prevent smugglers unload their goods onto the shore – there were several notorious smugglers that he sought to capture. Using his career as an extended case study, attendees will learn more about the range of sources available to trace the careers English customs officers through the 18th and 19th centuries as well as the day-to-day events that shaped their lives.
