Where there's a will, there's a way - A guide to English & Welsh Death, Burial & Probate

For our English & Welsh ancestors, death is not the end. It creates a number of records that can tell us a whole lot more about not just how they died, but how they lived their lives. This session will look at what we can learn from the traditions that surround death, as well as the records that can add more detail to a family tree.

When looking for more detail about our ancestors’ English & Welsh burials, where do we begin? Who was buried where? Who left a memorial stone? What can we use to fill the gaps in our family trees? This session will explore the records available to answer these questions, and the traditions and laws to be aware of, telling us about not only the death of our relatives, but much more besides.

After death & burial, comes the complex process of administering an estate known as probate, and in England & Wales, there are so many places to look for the records that surround it! This session will explain wills, the probate system, the courts and laws that are responsible, and where to find the documents that help you tell your ancestors’ story.
