Ancient DNA meets genealogy: A quick look at how 23andMe’s Historical Matches links you to the past
Over the past two decades, the study of ancient DNA (aDNA) has transformed the field of genetics. Recent breakthroughs in aDNA technology—including those pioneered by 23andMe researchers—now make it possible to identify direct genetic connections between living people and their historical relatives.
Taught by an expert with over ten years of experience generating and analyzing aDNA, in this abbreviated course we will take a quick look into what makes aDNA unique, what it means to share a genetic connection (or “historical match”) to historical individuals, and how these historical matches can empower genealogical research. We’ll also discuss how 23andMe customers can learn about their own historical matches via the 23andMe Historical Matches feature and help contribute to new aDNA research.
