Conducting Holocaust Research: Methodology and Resources

Among the many atrocities that underscore the Holocaust, this period served as a defining event in the genealogical history of the Jewish people. Not only was one-third of the worldwide Jewish population decimated, but both survivors and the greater Jewish world lost their connection to both family and history. Consequently, a common belief is that genealogical research is pointess because there’s nothing left to find. This presentation seeks to dispel this myth by providing strategies, resources , and case studies for conducting Holocaust research.

      Cracking Canadian Census Clues

Canadian census records are essential to family history research, but they’re more than just lists of names and ages. These documents reflect a diverse, multilingual, and often politically motivated portrait of Canadian society. This session will help you go beyond the basics and learn how to decode the complex layers of information embedded in census returns from 1851 through 1931.
You’ll learn how to interpret ethnic identifiers, religious affiliations, and occupation labels that do not always translate clearly. Discover why certain questions were asked or omitted based on shifting government priorities, cultural biases, and linguistic practices. We’ll examine how factors such as immigration, colonization, and assimilation shaped the language and content of the census, and how understanding these dynamics leads to more effective research outcomes.

Genealogy at the Crossroads: International Links in Greece

Nestled at the crossroads of Europe, Asia, and Africa, where the Mediterranean meets the Aegean Sea, Greece has long served as a vibrant gateway linking continents, peoples, and civilizations. For centuries, Greeks migrated throughout the Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean, while many others journeyed these lands for trade, war, refuge, and education. Despite this, the significance of Greece and its rich archival heritage in international genealogy have often been overlooked. Through a genealogical lens and the utilization of newly accessible online sources this session will uncover international stories rooted in Greece: WWI soldiers from Europe and its colonies, Protestant missionaries, students of the region’s first university, Philhellene Europeans and Americans, Jewish communities, and Muslim populations. Greek genealogy sources hold vital importance for researchers worldwide, and showcase how interconnected human stories and genealogies are!

Searching For a Long-Lost Family Connections

Ms. Hunt’s journey to England to find her long-lost brother was marked by persistence, historical archives, and memory echoes. The path to discovering family connections was a gift to her father. It was emotional and challenging, especially before modern technology, mobile phones, and DNA simplified the process.

As a researcher determined to piece together fragments of the past and the need for bone marrow for a dying sister, she began her quest by contacting the Society of Genealogists in London. This institution offered resources and guidance that proved invaluable. A year after initiating contact with them and losing her sister to cancer, she found herself sifting through dusty records in the General Register Office—a repository of births, deaths, and marriages—during a time of national mourning, as England grieved the loss of our beloved people's princess, Diana. The atmosphere was somber, amplifying the significance of her pursuit, as the search for her brother.

      Swedish Probate Records

Probate records or estate inventories are the second most popular source for researching ancestors in Sweden. These records can prove genealogical relationships and locate missing relatives. They offer valuable insights into your ancestor’s life. Estate inventories are divided into two primary sections: the preamble or ingress, which gives information about the deceased and names the heirs, and the inventory, which details the deceased’s assets and debts. The presentation will provide a short historical background, show the participant how to find these records, and offer tips on reading and interpreting them.
