Where Do I Begin? Getting Started with African American Research

This four part miniseries will cover the basics to research your African American Research. You can switch between the parts of the series by click on the title to the left. Part 1: "Where Do I Begin? Getting Started with African American Research" is for the beginner new to genealogy and will touch on such subjects as gathering home records, interviewing relatives, analyzing the family information and research strategies for getting started in 20th century records. Part 2: "Finding Helpful Resources, Post 1865" digs a bit deeper into building the family pedigree and finding and using record sets beyond vital records and census. Part 3: "How FamilySearch Tools Can Help with Post 1865 Research will build on the resources for African American Research" specific to FamilySearch, such as the Research Wiki and the FamilySearch Catalog. Part 4: "Unique African American Records, Post 1865" will review record sets that are uniquely African American.

This is part 4 of the four part African American mini-series. In this class we will review record sets that are uniquely African American, including Freedmen’s Bureau records, newspapers and military records.*The websites demonstrated from 13:30-14:30 and 15:20-18:25 have changed in design. These sites still have similar functionality.*
