Why does the relationship viewer show "Relationship Unknown"?

Sometimes when a user tries to view relationships, the relationship viewer says, "Relationship Unknown" Here are some reasons this happens and potential fixes:

Permissions must be enabled

When users connect over messaging, they can view their relationship to each other. To be able to view the relationship, both users will need to enable relationship viewing. Go to your Settings and turn on Enable Relationship Viewing. This will allow you and other users to see their relationship to you, as well as any common ancestors. This permission does not affect relationship viewing between you and people in your family tree.

Your family tree needs more data

If you haven't added your family into the tree yet, we won't be able to find any relatives. You will need to start one so that Family Tree has information about you to search.

If you do have a family tree started, you may just need to add a few more generations so that we can find your relationships to others. Try to take one of your family lines (the ancestors of one of your parents) back a few more generations. This will open up more possibilities of family relationships with other users.

Not enough trees

There may not be enough family trees submitted from your particular part of the world. This makes it difficult for Family Tree to be able to find a connection. You can help by encouraging others with a similar background to enter their information in Family Tree while you continue to work on your own.

Your common ancestor is not within 15 generations

The relationship viewer searches for up to 15 generations of ancestors and up to 15 generations of their descendants. You may have a common ancestor past 15 generations.
