In Family Tree, how do I insert a missing generation?

If you discover that one entire generation of a family line was skipped, you can add it in Family Tree.

Steps (website)

  1. In Family Tree, go to the person page of the child showing the wrong parents.
  2. If you do not see Life Sketch and Vitals, click Details near the top left portion of the screen.
  3. Scroll down to Family Members. Make note of the ID numbers of the parents who currently show on the record, so you can later add them as the grandparents of the child.
  4. Click the pencil icon beside the name of the child in the Family Members section on the Parents and Siblings side.
  5. Click Remove or Replace to the right of the name of the child.
  6. On the Remove or Replace screen, click to check the box indicating you have reviewed the relationships, sources, and notes for the individuals.
  7. To remove the incorrect parents and find or add the correct parents, click Replace Parents. Note: After you replace the parents, please review the notes and sources to see if you need to make changes to them.
  8. Add the grandparents as the parents of the newly added mother or father.

Steps (mobile)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, navigate to the person page of the child.
  2. Tap the Parents tab.
  3. Tap the pencil icon beside the name of the child in the Family Members section.
  4. Tap Wrong Parents.
    • Android: Enter your reason for making this change, and then tap Remove.
    • iOS: Tap Continue, and then enter your reason for making this change. Tap Remove.
  5. Navigate back to the person page of the child, and tap Add Parent.
  6. Enter information to search, and add the accurate set of parents. Tap Find By ID, and add them by their ID numbers. Note: After you replace the parents, please review the notes and sources to see if you need to make changes to them.
  7. Add the grandparents as the parents of the newly added mother or father.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

  1. In Family Tree Lite, navigate to the person page of the child.
  2. Click View Family.
  3. In the Parents and Siblings section, beside the name of the child, click the pencil icon.
  4. In the Child section of the box that appears, click Remove or Replace. (Do not click Remove or Replace in the Father or Mother sections.)
  5. Review the relationships, sources, and notes, and then click Replace.
  6. Search for and add the parents. Note: After you replace the parents, please review the notes and sources to see if you need to make changes to them.
  7. Add the grandparents as the parents of the newly added mother or father.
