How do I search the International Genealogical Index (IGI)?

You can search the contributed International Genealogical Index from within the Genealogies section of FamilySearch.

The contributed IGI contains over 430 million ancestors contributed by members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Each record contains one event, including birth, baptism (christening), marriage, or death.

The quality of this information varies. Duplicate entries and inconsistent information are common. Always verify contributed entries against sources of primary information.

Steps (website only)

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.org.
  2. On the FamilySearch home page, click Search.
  3. Click Genealogies.
  4. Scroll down to the section titled Explore one of our collections.
  5. Click the right arrow button until you reach the collection titled International Genealogical Index.
  6. Click Search for a Person.
  7. Enter your search terms.
