How to browse images in the United States 1950 Census records

Record collections often include a browse images option. Most of the time, they include waypoints to help you navigate to the images of interest. The United States 1950 Census record collection is different. Instead of waypoints, the browse option takes you to Explore Historical Images. Filters help you navigate the images.

Steps (website)

  1. Sign in to FamilySearch.
  2. At the top of the page, click Search and then Records.
  3. Below the main search box, find the Find a Collection section.
  4. In the Collection Title search box, enter "1950 census".
  5. Click United States 1950 Census.
  6. Below the description of the collection, click Browse all 1,847,635 images.
  7. The system moves you to Explore Historical Images results for the 1950 census.

If you do not see a Refine Search panel to the right of our search results, you can activate it. Above your search results, click Refine Search. Narrow your results to a specific place:

  • In the Place search at the top, enter as specific place. We suggest county and state or city, county, and state. Then click Update.
  • Or click Show all 51 places within the United States and click a state. You can further limit results to a county. In some cases, you can then choose a place within the selected county.

Steps (mobile)

  1. To open the menu, tap the 3 lines icon.
    1. On Android, tap 3 lines in the top-left.
    2. On Apple iOS, tap 3 lines in lower right.
  2. Tap Search Historical Records.
  3. Continue with the steps for the website.
