How do I search by enumeration district (ED) in Explore Historical Images?

You can find images for a specific enumeration district (ED) with the Keyword field.

Before you begin

  • Multiple places can use the same enumeration district value. To get the best results, search for a specific county or state.
  • Caution: The enumeration district search only works when the indexed data for a census shows in Explore Historical Images. You can browse the images for the US Census records in Explore Historical Images. But, not all the census indexes are searchable from Explore Historical Images.

Steps (website)

  1. On the main Explore Historical Images page, click More Options.
  2. In the Place field, enter a city, county, and state in the United States. For more rural areas, county and state can be a better option. In the list that appears below the search box, click the standardized place.
  3. In the Date field, enter the year of the census. Click the standardized version.
  4. In the Record Type field, enter "Census" and click Census Records.
  5. In the Keyword field, enter the enumeration district within quotation marks. For example: "18-46"
  6. In the Creator field, enter "United States. Bureau of the Census". Include the capital letters and the period after "United States".
  7. Click Search
