How do I add nicknames to Family Tree?

You can add multiple versions of a person's name in Family Tree. Generally, our recommendation is that you enter the person's birth name or complete legal name in the Vitals section. Then add variations in the Other Information field.

In the Other Information field, you can add alternate names and identify the type of name. The options are "Also Known As," Birth Name, Married Name, and Nickname. The Chinese language template has 4 additional types: Taboo Name (諱), Art Name (號), Courtesy Name (字), and Posthumous Name (諡).

Alternate names can make it easier for others to find the person in Family Tree. The system includes alternate names in Family Tree Find.

Steps (website)

Landscape, Portrait, Fan Chart, and Descendancy Views

  1. In the top menu, click Family Tree, and then click Tree.
  2. Find the person that you want to enhance.
  3. Click the person's name. In the details that pop up, click the person's name again.
  4. Click the Details tab.
  5. Scroll to the Other Information section.  
  6. Click + Alternate Name.
  7. Click to select the type of alternate name and language.
  8. Enter the name.
  9. Enter a reason statement.
  10. Click Save.

First Ancestor View

  1. In the top menu, click Family Tree, and then click Tree.
  2. Find the person that you want to enhance.
  3. Click the person's name.
  4. In the side sheet, scroll to the Fact section. Click Add Fact.
  5. Click Alternate Name.
  6. Click to select the type of alternate name and language.
  7. Enter the name.
  8. Enter a reason statement.
  9. Click Save.

Steps (mobile)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, display the person page that you want to enhance.
  2. If the Details section does not show, tap Details.
  3. Scroll to the Other Information section.
  4. Tap the plus sign in a green circle.
  5. Tap Alternate name.
  6. Tap to select the language and type of alternate name.
  7. Enter the name.
  8. Tap Continue.
  9. Enter a reason statement.
  10. Tap Save.

Steps (Family Tree Lite)

You cannot add alternate names in Family Tree Lite.
