Overview of Family Name Assist
The Family Name Assist experience is a simplified way to help members easily prepare names for a temple baptistry experience. The goal is to help the member focus on the Spirit and have a wonderful first experience in the temple. Where possible, please attend the temple with the member.
Note: Temple and family history consultants may be invited by a bishop or other priesthood leader to help a new member, youth, or nonendowed member to prepare names using Family Name Assist.
Family Name Assist is NOT:
- An opportunity to add multiple generations of the member's family to the Family Tree.
- The time to research and add sources to people in the Family Tree.
- The time to learn about all the features of the FamilySearch website.
- The time to have a discovery experience.
All of the preceding experiences are great things to do but should be part of a different experience and approached according to the member's needs.
For more information and a video, please see the Family Name Assist page here.
How consultants can assist the member with a temple baptistry experience
After the member's temple recommend interview, temple and family history consultants may be invited by a bishop or other priesthood leader to help a new member, youth, or nonendowed member to prepare names using Family Name Assist. The person invited to help will receive a message with a link to assist the member. This link is also available here.
The Family Name Assist tool helps you to do the following with the member:
- Sign in to FamilySearch.
- Prepare a family name using a simplified family name card preparation experience.
- When family names are not available, other names are found through Ordinances Ready.
- The name is automatically reserved, with options to print the card.
- Assist the member with temporal and spiritual baptistry preparation.
- Schedule a temple appointment.
