When you add a person to Family Tree, a name is required. However, sometimes historical records will identify a family member but not list the name. Here are some ways to enter a person with an unknown name into Family Tree.
Terms like Mrs., Mr., and Miss
If you include these terms, enter them in the Title field. Do not enter them in the First or Last Names field. These terms may not be applicable for all languages.
Descriptive words
Do not enter terms like "unnamed," "mother," "daughter," or "son" in the First Name or Last Name field unless they were really the person's name.
Unknown or incomplete name for a wife or mother
You know her first name but not her maiden last name: Enter the wife's first name, and leave the last name blank.
You know her maiden last name but not her first name: Leave the first name blank, and enter just her maiden name in the last name field.
You do not know any part of her name: Enter Mrs. in the Title field followed by the name of the husband in the appropriate fields.
It is also acceptable to add the father and children to Family Tree and not create a profile for the mother.
Unknown or incomplete name for a husband or father
You know his first name but not last name: Enter his first name and leave the last name blank.
You know his last name but not first name: Leave the first name blank and enter just the last name.
You do not know any part of his name: If you do not know anything about the father, add the mother and children and do not create a profile for the father.
If you know something other than the name about the father, such as a birthplace or occupation, do not create a profile for the father, but add what you know about him to a note or story that is attached to the mother or one of his children.
Unknown child's name
Leave the first name field blank, and then enter the father's last name. Select the sex if known.
