How do I delete a family group?

To delete a family group, all members and administrators need to be removed from the group or leave the group. After everyone leaves or is removed, the group is no longer available for use, even to the person who created it.

If you created a group and accidentally removed yourself and all members from it, contact FamilySearch. A system administrator can reinstate the group.

When you delete a group, be aware of what happens to the group's shared data:

  • Group chat and feed. The group chat and feed are deleted. They will be restored if the group is reactivated.
  • Memories with limited access to the group. Memories shared with the group will remain in the gallery of the user who originally shared them. The user can change the visibility to private or public. If the group is restored, the memories are reshared back to the group as long as the visibility is still set to the group.
  • Family group tree. The tree is not deleted. It remains in Family Tree but is not accessible unless the group is reinstated. If you want to delete the tree, you will need to delete the people in it individually.

Steps (website)

  1. On FamilySearch.org, click your name.
  2. Select Family Groups.
  3. Click the family group.
  4. Click the Group Members tab.
  5. Remove every group member except yourself.
    1. Click the Remove option.
    2. Click Remove.
  6. Remove yourself.
    1. Click .
    2. Click Leave. You will see a message indicating that the group will be deleted.
    3. Click Delete Family Group.

Steps (mobile)

  1. In the Family Tree mobile app, open the Family Groups feature:
    • Apple iOS: Tap More.
    • Android: In the top-left, tap the 3 lines icon.
  2. Tap Family Groups.
  3. Tap the family group that you want.
  4. Remove every group member except yourself.
    1. In the list of members, swipe a member's name left.
    2. Tap Remove.
    3. Tap Remove again.
  5. Remove yourself:

    2. Tap Leave Group.
    3. Tap Leave.
