FamilySearch Center ChromeOS Flex Instruction

Introduction


These instructions will guide you through the process of installing the ChromeOS Flex on a FamilySearch Center computer. Below are instructions for each step of the installation process.
Before you begin preparing for installation, you may need to verify that your device is certified for use and compatible with ChromeOS Flex. Remember that ChromeOS Flex and ChromeOS are not the same. Only use these instructions to install ChromeOS Flex and Enterprise Enroll on FamilySearch provided devices.

What you need


The following items are needed in order to install ChromeOS Flex:
  • A device to create the USB installer.
  • USB drive with 8 GB or more.
Note: On occasion, Sandisk or other USB drives may not work as installers. All contents on the USB drive, if there are any, will be erased when ChromeOS Flex is installed.
  • A Windows, Mac, or Linux target device where you plan to install ChromeOS Flex.
Note: Please only install and enroll on FamilySearch provided computers.

Minimum device requirements


The minimum device requirements to install ChromeOS Flex are:
  • Architecture: Intel or AMD x86–64-bit compatible device
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Internal storage: 16 GB
  • Bootable from USB drive
  • BIOS: Full administrator access. You need to boot from the ChromeOS Flex USB installer and make some adjustments in the BIOS if you run into issues.
  • Processor and graphics: Components made before 2010 may result in a poor experience.
Note: Intel GMA 500, 600, 3600, and 3650 graphics hardware do not meet ChromeOS Flex performance standards.

Creating an Installation USB Drive


Important Note: This part of the process is on an already working computer with an internet connection and the Google Chrome web browser. Using any web browser other than Google Chrome will result in errors.

 If you don’t already have the Google Chrome web browser, you can download it from: https://www.google.com/chrome

 You will need a USB flash drive with at least 8GB capacity. All content on this drive will be erased.

Step 1: Open the Google Chrome web browser.

Step 2: Navigate to https://chrome.google.com/webstore.

Step 3: In the search box, type Chromebook Recovery Utility and click to open the utility.

Step 4: Click the Add to Chrome button.

Step 5: Click the Add Extension button.

Step 6: Click the Extensions icon, represented by a puzzle piece.

Step 7: Select the Chromebook Recovery Utility option.

Step 8: Click the Get Started button.

Step 9: Click the Select a model from a list hyperlink.

Step 9: In the manufacturer field, click the drop-down arrow and select Google ChromeOS Flex.

Step 10: In the model field, click the drop-down arrow and select ChromeOS Flex.

Step 11: Click the Continue button.

Step 12: Insert the USB drive being used for the installation and select the correct USB from the media list.

Step 13: Click the Continue button.

Step 14: Verify that the recovery image is going to be installed to the correct USB drive.

Step 15: Click the Create now button.

Note: This installation USB drive can be used multiple times to install multiple computers.

Step 16: When the installation process is finished, click Done.

Step 17: Remove the USB drive you used for installation.

Setting the BIOS


This part of the process is performed on the Dell All-in-One computer on which you want to install ChromeOS Flex. It will configure the computer to be able to read and start from the installation USB drive that you created in the previous step.

BIOS screens may vary depending on the computer model.

Step 1: Turn on the computer.

Step 2: Soon as you see any text or logo appear on the screen, start tapping the F2 until the computer boots into the BIOS setting menu.

Step 3: Click the System Configuration or Storage tab, under SATA Operation select AHCI.

Step 4:Under Secure Boot and select Secure Boot Enable.

Step 5: To save the settings, on the bottom of the screen, click apply changes.

Step 6: On the bottom of the screen, click Exit.

Step 7: To save the changes, click Yes. The computer will then reboot.

Setting the BIOS for Dell Optiplex 3000TC Devices


This part of the process is performed on the new Dell Optiplex 3000TC computer. It will configure the computer to be able to read and start from the installation USB drive that you created in the previous step.

For Dell Optiplex 3000TC devices, you will need to unlock the BIOS.

Step 1: Turn on the computer.

Step 2: Soon as you see any text or logo appear on the screen, start tapping the F2 until the computer boots into the BIOS setting menu.

Step 3: Click on the Admin Password button.

Step 4: Type in the BIOS Password, Fireport.

Note: the password is case-sensitive.

Step 5: To boot to USB, click the Integrated Devices tab. Then under the USB Configuration section, click the Enable USB Boot Support checkbox.

Step 6: To turn off Secure Boot, click the Boot Configuration tab.

Step 7: Under the Secure Boot section, click the Enable Secure Boot toggle set to off.

Step 8: Click yes.

Step 9: Click the Enable Microsoft UEFI CA toggle set to off.

Step 10: Click yes.

Step 11: Click Storage, under SATA/NVMe Operation click AHCI/NVMe.

Step 12: Click Yes.

Step 13: Click the Apply Changes button.

Step 14: Click OK.

Step 15: Click Exit.

Note: The computer will then reboot. After the reboot, Dell Security Manager will present a 4-digit code. The 4-digit code will be different each time. Type the 4-digit number in the text field and click the accept button.

Installing ChromeOS Flex


Step 1: Insert the installation USB drive into the computer where ChromeOS Flex will be installed.

Step 2: Turn on the computer.

Step 3: To open the one-time boot setup menu, as soon as you see any text or logo appear on the computer screen, press the F12 key until the One-Time Boot Setting menu appears.

Note: If the computer has already rebooted and is showing some kind of login screen, turn it off and back on again and repeat step 3.

Step 4: To start the computer from the USB drive, click or select the correct USB flash drive option.

Note: For Dell Optiplex 3000TC devices, enter the BIOS password, Fireport, and then click ok.

Step 5: On the Welcome to ChromeOS Flex screen, click the Get started button.

Step 6: On the Start using ChromeOS Flex screen, select the option to Install ChromeOS Flex and then click next.

Step 7: Carefully review the on-screen warning about erasing data, and then click the Install ChromeOS Flex button.

Step 8: To confirm the installation, click the Install button.

Note: When the installation is complete, a message appears on the screen and the computer turns off automatically.

Step 9: Remove the installation USB drive.

Enroll a Computer with FamilySearch


Step 1: Without using the installation USB drive, restart the computer.

Step 2: On the Welcome to ChromeOS Flex screen, click the Get started button.

Step 3: If you are using WiFi, on the Connect to network screen, select the Liahona network. If you are using ethernet, continue to step 12.

Step 4: Type in the Liahona password.

Step 5: Click Connect.

Step 6: To sign into the network, click on Liahona.

Step 7: In the Liahona Network window, click Sign in.

Step 8: Accept the Terms by clicking Continue to the Internet.

Step 9: In the upper right corner, click the X to close the window.

Step 10: In the upper right corner, click the X to close the Liahona Network window.

Step 11: Click the Next button.

Step 12: If prompted on the Google Terms of Service screen, click Accept and continue.

Step 13: Click the hyperlink for Enterprise Enrollment. Do not click any other option or hyperlink on the screen.

Step 14: Enter the enrollment account email.

Note: If you do not know the username for your area, contact your local support. They will be able to provide you with that information, as well as a downloadable copy of this instruction.

Note: Please only enroll FamilySearch-provided computers to the account.

Step 15: Click the Next button.

Step 16: Enter the password for the account.

Note: If you do not know the password for your area, contact your local support. They will be able to provide you with that information, as well as a downloadable copy of this instruction.

Step 17: Click the Enroll enterprise device button.

Step 18: If prompted, enter a mobile phone number to receive a text message with a verification code.

Step 19: Click the Enroll enterprise device button.

Step 20: On the Verify it's you screen, in the Phone number box, enter the verification code that was received on your mobile phone.

Step 21: Click the Enroll enterprise device button.

Step 22: On the Device information screen, enter the asset identifier code using the following format:

FSC-C-[Country Code]-[Center Unit Number]-[Device Serial Number].

Note: Dell’s Serial Numbers are its Service Tags which is found on the back of the computer. As an example, a center in the United States with unit number 1234567 enrolling its first device with Service Tag 44GS82, the asset identifier code would be FSC-C-US-1234567-44GS82.

Note: The service tag (ST) is found on a very small sticker on the back of the device.

Step 23: In the Device Location field, type the center unit number.

Step 24: Click the Next button.

Step 25: On the Enterprise enrollment complete screen, click the Done button.

The device is now ready to use.

 Please note that the device will be automatically reset each time it is rebooted, so users must save any personal files to a USB flash drive before signing out.
