For many years, the International Genealogical Index (IGI) was a part of FamilySearch. With the changes that have been taking place with the new FamilySearch, you will notice that the IGI is no longer available as a separate, searchable collection of records. Instead, it has been merged into the larger database that is the foundation of FamilySearch.
Member Submitted Records
Records that were originally submitted by members of the LDS Church will now appear in the FamilySearch Tree. The tree is not currently available to the general public but will be soon. When it is made public, all patron-submitted information that originally resided in the IGI will be viewable in a lineage-linked tree format. Users can locate these lineage-linked record “branches” and easily attach them to their own family tree.
Extracted Records
Some records that ended up in the IGI were extracted from parish registers and other original records. They are now available for searching as part of the original record collections they came from. This is helpful because records can now be seen in context to all the other records in the collection and in light of the history of the collection as a whole.
Records that used to make up the IGI can be searched by using the basic search and advanced search templates on the home page. Using these search templates eliminates the need to do a search using a batch number.
You Can Still Search Using Batch Numbers
If you still prefer to search for a record using a batch number, the new FamilySearch has made it much easier for you to do so. Using the new IGI batch number search will allow you to do that. Simply click on the Advanced Search link below the search fields, and fill in the Batch Number field with the batch number you have.
