For the past few months, no compiled family history books from the Main Floor of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City have been pulled from the shelves for digitization. Thousands of these books that fall within the range of surnames starting with the letters C through S are still accessible on the shelves and will remain there for some time. New priorities have placed a halt on digitizing the remainder of these books until books acquired from the Los Angeles (California) Family History Center and the Ogden (Utah) Family History Center have been digitized. Don Anderson, Senior Vice President of Patron Services at FamilySearch states "it could be 3-6 months or as much as two years" for the digitization of the book collections from the Centers to be finished and for digitization of compiled family history books at the Family History Library to resume.
Adding books from the Centers in Los Angeles and Ogden will greatly increase the value of Family History Books.
Family History Books is a free online service offered by FamilySearch and a number of partner organizations. Digital copies of more than 60,000 genealogy and family history books can be searched and viewed for free within this collection.
