A completely updated Family Tree mobile app for Android was released on 20 December 2024. The app has several new features and enhancements to make it even more enjoyable for you to use. Here’s what you can expect when you download it.

We’ve made the app more accessible with features such as screen reader support and adjustable text sizes, making it easier for everyone to use.
Updates to Pedigree View
It is now possible to add spouses and children to a person with ease, even if no other spouses or children are shown. While in the pedigree tree view, you can also hide or show hints and other indicators to help you focus on part of your tree.

Other New Features
Another new feature is the ability to locate and use identification numbers (PID) more easily. By entering a known identification number, you can find the person you are seeking.
You can also reach out to living relatives shown in the relationship viewer for contributors and Relatives Around Me. Start a chat, and save them as contacts. This option was previously available only if you used Relatives at RootsTech.

Just as redoing the wiring or adding insulation to a home improves its efficiency, many of the improvements made to the Android app do not affect what you see in the user interface. However, you will enjoy a faster, more dependable experience on your device. Smaller download sizes leave more room on your device for other data and apps while also allowing for smoother downloads. You will now experience fewer delays while retrieving information from our servers so you can navigate and edit your family tree with ease.
Compatibility with Older Devices
We know how important it is for everyone to stay connected with their family history, regardless of the device they use. The updated Family Tree app is compatible with devices that run Android OS 10 and later. Current users of the old version of the app, which runs on Android version 7.0 and higher, will still be able to use that version. However, the old version will no longer receive bug fixes, new features, and other updates.
The decision to require a higher version of Android is always difficult. Right now, users can continue using the older version of the app and do not need to upgrade their devices. But we will eventually retire the old version of the app.
We recognize that requiring updated devices for the Family Tree app to function is a sacrifice for some of our valued users. In an ever-changing technology environment, updates are eventually required if we are to continue providing a reliable, secure app that can take advantage of the latest innovations.
